Workshop Details: Performance Management Systems - Current Practices

Join Kwela principal, Russel Horwitz in a workshop offered through the BC Human Resources Management Association. Russel's session will examine the differences between performance 'management' and 'performance appraisal' and will show you how to move beyond those annual performance reviews that frustrate both employees and their managers.

Workshop Synopsis

What does your organization want from its performance management system? What do your employees want from it? Continuous studies show that organizations typically want to use performance management to improve organizational results, keep employees focused on key priorities, and provide a culture that will attract and develop employees. What do employees want? They want a good relationship with their leaders, meaningful work, opportunities for growth and advancement and a clear understanding of work objectives. Simple…right? Wrong! Implementing, managing and utilizing a performance management system is no easy task, but it is certainly attainable and organizations quickly see endless rewards in successful implementation. These sessions will offer ideas and techniques to effectively utilize and implement a performance management system within your organization.

9:00 AM – 10:30 AM
Performance Management System or Performance Appraisal?

Russel Horwitz, Principle, Kwela Leadership and Talent Management

Are your employees performing at their best? This question is the acid test of how well your performance management system is working for you.

The term “Performance Management System” is often used synonymously with “performance appraisal”. Actually, thinking this way is one of the things that gets organizations into trouble, because the yearly appraisal process, no matter how well designed, is not enough to ensure that employees perform at their best. For a performance management system to deliver the goods, it must encourage the right behaviours from both the manager and employee throughout the year. In this session you will learn:

  • What research says about the links between performance management, employee engagement, and organizational results.
  • Best practices in the goal setting and performance appraisal process.
  • What must happen throughout the year and how to hold managers accountable for doing it
  • The skills that managers need to have, and how to get them
  • How to pay for performance without damaging employee trust
  • How to make the performance management system work through linkage with other HR aspects such as competency models, leadership development, succession planning, and compensation.
